Fantasy Football Podcast 2016 - Standard Mock Draft + Preseason News

He's not this superior talent on film. He's a volume play. And if he doesn't get the volume, if he's giving up third downs in their entirety, he's a major risk. And so that's like back of the head stuff right now. That's not front of the head. This is not defining my draft. Fifth round pick, I'm taking Matt Jones still. Okay. The thing that stood out to me was the third downs. When it was third down, it was Chris Thompson, which, I mean, Andy's shrugging, but. I'm only, no, I'm not shrugging at your sentiment. I'm just shrugging at the fact that, look, it's a preseason.

One game. Okay, Thompson's going to get his reps on third down. I mean, he doesn't mean he will. Like continue to watch this because to me, if Matt Jones is not getting, you know, a decent amount of those third downs, then, and they're saying that, well, Keith Marshall will take some of the early work away from Matt Jones. That volume play just shrinks and shrinks and shrinks to a point where I don't want anything to do with him. So he's just...

I'm not going to overreact right now, but it's something that you need to keep an eye on. There is an alternative to Matt Jones and Keith Marshall. So if there's not success in the running game, Jay Gruden's frustration will, they're going to keep trying different people if Matt Jones can't get it done. He's one of those guys where if he delivers in the first couple games, it could mean a big workload. And if he doesn't, it can mean you're really disappointed early on in the season. Let's talk about the, I know Jason, you watch the Saints game.

Yes. What were your thoughts on Michael Thomas, the rookie wide receiver for the Saints? Somebody that a lot of people were excited to see in preseason action. I think he looked great. He showed body control. He showed good hands. I mean, Drew Brees wasn't playing, so you never know. A lot of times when your backup quarterback comes in, he throws to who he's practicing with. So that makes sense that the targets would be there in the preseason game. But what he did show was talent.

He showed that he is capable. He looked as good as Marcus Colston has looked over the last few years of his career when he's slower and older. So what this means to me is that this is bad news for Brandon Coleman because he looked completely superior just from a talent perspective. It's great news for the overall offense.

A lot of times people are like, well, what about Willie Snee? What about Brandon Cooks? What about Kobe Fleener? I think Kobe Fleener might have a little bit more. Brandon Coleman, Kobe Fleener, and Michael Thomas, those guys are going to be vying for those same type of targets out of the slot. But he looked good, and I think Drew Breeze is going to have weapons that he hasn't had in a long time as far as a complete core of different options to throw to.

I watched a couple of things in particular last night. I watched the Ravens running backs. I was impressed to see Terrence West get to the edge on his second touchdown. He did look like somebody who had lost weight, and I hadn't seen that speed from him. He was always kind of a stuck in the mud type of player previously. So that was impressive to me. Buck Allen looked very good, and Kenneth Dixon put up the best line of all the running backs, including a 19-yard run.

This is just to say, you know, my perspective on that backfield has just been kind of avoidance. It's not been, I haven't supported Forsett as this top tier guy because I just think there are a lot of good weapons and I don't really know how it's going to break down. I could see games where Buck Allen gets three quarters of the work because they're trailing and he's on the field in a lot of third downs and he's on the field in passing downs. And, you know, Terrence West, just I think for all of us surprised that he came out of the woodwork. We thought he could have been the guy cut there. Yeah.

Instead, he's lost weight and he looks different. In the preseason last year, you know, you saw certain players that, okay, you hear the camp report and now does it add up in the preseason report? Watch Terrence West over the next few weeks and see if it still adds up because he did look like a different player. One of the nice things about his reports is that they've been consistent. You know, you heard rumblings early. Then you heard them in training camp. Then you see it in preseason. It's just good. You know, look, I still believe in Justin Fawcett.

I did a mock draft for our Series League last night after this game. I drafted Justin Fawcett. I still am willing to do that. I believe he is the starter in a Mark Trussman offense. But I also went in our dynasty league, and I picked up Terrence West, who was still on waivers in a large dynasty. So if you're playing in a dynasty, pick them up, at least pay attention. I agree with you, Andy. It's a very muddled situation there. It is a backfield that, generally speaking, I'm going to avoid.

unless I think I can get a value late enough in a draft where I go, well. And to me, that might only be Terrence West or Kenneth Dixon. I believe Terrence West might, this preseason, Terrence West might make Justin Forsett the real value here. Because Justin Forset, if Terrence West keeps playing good, people are going to be. Well. If he keeps playing well, people are going to be.

super afraid of just for set just like you are and if he starts slipping back to the ninth round well yeah that's a i've been getting him in the seventh and eighth round so i'm not i would not be shocked if he's if he just continues that slide the other thing i watched last night was i saw every snap from all of the broncos quarterbacks and i wanted to just kind of get that on my eyes i've been somebody who believes that sanchise can run that offense um in my opinion sancho's looked the best of all three um

You know, he stayed in the pocket. He took a big hit when he delivered a long pass to to Mary's Thomas, who annihilated the DB and just ran into the open. I think I could have made that through. Yeah, and catch. But to me, if I watched, you know, Simeon and Paxton Lynch, I'm telling you right now, man, Paxton Lynch, he reminded me a one player. Oh, no. Jake Plummer. He reminded me quick feet, fast step, you know, five step, seven step drop.

Quick out of the pocket could throw on the run. He's not there yet. Rough edges, but good arm strength, made a couple throws I was impressed with. Sanchez looked to me like the clear guy you should be running with with a defense first type of situation. But I saw some things in Paxton Lynch that made me say, okay, look, you know, Sanchez is not getting out of the pocket the way Paxton Lynch can. Paxon Lynch is a bigger guy.

I saw some things that I liked. It was just game one. You know, you had Carson Wentz that played a very uneven first game last night as well. Very exciting to have football. There are some experts in the community that think the preseason is purely irrelevant. I'm not one of them. I think it's not irrelevant. I think you have situations where Julius Thomas flashed a couple years ago in Denver, and you only could see that in the preseason. You saw last year Doug Martin look like a different player. Mark Ingram looked like a different player.

You need to pay attention to less of the stat lines and more of the eyeballs. And that's what we try to do. Yeah. That's when I talk about Michael Thomas in New Orleans. It wasn't his stat line. Exactly. He made great grabs. He stayed in bounds on difficult catches and things like that that you go, okay, this guy can play.

And if you saw. Alan Robinson's good too. Ellen Robinson is extremely good. And the last thing I just wanted, before we get into the mock, it was Malcolm Mitchell for the Patriots, was looking great, had a nasty elbow injury. But they're saying it might just have dislocated. And he made only miss four weeks, which would be good news. I mean, if you watched, have you seen it, Andy?

I hear it's not something to be seen. You don't want to see. I dealt with my own elbow injury yesterday in the house. That's true. I'm happy to hear. No, my daughter. Oh, yeah. Yesterday we had my toddler, my daughter about to turn two. She, like, I guess it's called nursemaids elbow. It's when like it's like a dislocation of the elbow. It was very scary two hours. And then once the doctor pops it back into place, they're like 100% fine. So my daughter's fine, but we had two hours that I was like.

It was not exciting if you've ever had children and had to rush to urgent care. Hopefully Malcolm Mitchell is fine because that injury looked gruesome. I mean, basically it was the elbow bending at a 90 degree angle, just the wrong direction. And that's yucky. The yucky. I'll say it's true. That's a really good. That's on the injury report. Funny is not the right word, but someone went back to the Amandola.

injury when he was on the ramps. It was like almost the exact same picture of Amandola right next to Mitchell of the same injury. And Amandola only missed a few weeks. Didn't he come back into that same game, Amidola? I'm almost positive. I thought he did the elbow injury against the Cardinals. I do not recall. Anyway, I don't recall that either. But I'm happy to hear that Malcolm Mitchell will be able to be back. He looked great in that same game. I mean, he looked like the best Patriots receiver.

That was out there, granted. Since Brandon LaFelle. Well, no, I mean, they didn't have Julian Edelman. They didn't have Chris Hogan playing. They didn't have a lot of guys. But of their backups, he was the guy that clearly stood out. So I hope a speedy recovery for him. Hey, everybody that's listening, we spoke about this at the beginning of the show.

All right, I promise there's only one quarterback in this standard mock draft, guys. Maybe. Maybe. All right, so we're going to draft from the 12th position. This is a standard mock. I think it's going to be very intriguing the decisions we have to make at the turn. We're always picking back to back here. This is a situation that obviously a lot of owners are in, and they probably want to see what we would do in these circumstances. So...

Without further ado, let's get into the standard mock draft draft. All right, we just kicked it off at fantasy draft wizard. It's the easiest way that we know to mock draft live here on the air. It's a great resource. And I just heard that if you sign up at Fantasy Draft Wizard, it actually, you can do it on your phone now too. Ooh. Number one, Antonio Brown. Number two, Odell Beckham. Then David Johnson went. That's pretty high. That's the highest I've seen him in a mock. Yes. Adrian Peterson, Julio Jones. Todd Gurley, Ezekiel Elliott.

DeAndre Hopkins, Rob Gronkowski, and Des Bryant and A.J. Green. That is the 11 names that went right before us. We'll make sure that we save this mock draft. We'll post it on the episode page so you can review it in its entirety. We're on the board here at 12 and then the first pick of the second round. So we've got two picks in row, 12 and 13. A lot of names on the board that we adore. I know one.

that Jason's probably swooning over is Lamar Miller at pick number 12 in his standard league here. But you also have Lev Bell. You have Lev Bell. You also have Jamal Charles. I feel like I need to take myself out of this because I know I have Lamar Miller much higher than you two guys in standard leagues. I know you guys have Jamal Charles and Lamar Miller flipped with me.

And I love Jamal Charles. I love Levion Bell here. So there's a lot of great options. At wide receiver. Alan Robinson. Alan Robinson, Brandon Marshall, Alshan, Jeffrey, Mike Evans. There's just a lot of good options. I would assume, based on how we normally draft, that we would probably take at the turn, one running back and one wide receiver. That's what I'm looking at doing. That's what I was going to ask you for the audience sake, too, is how do you think about...

both of these picks because we just talked about ZRB, or we just talked about the heavy wide receiver picks. But in this position, we're not drafting again for a long time. Yeah, we're getting, yeah, the next time we draft, no absolute tier one studs are on the board. And since you can get one in each category giving yourself some depth, this lineup is a two running back, two wide receiver flex, which is pretty much the normal. I think you split these. All right.
