NFL Draft Preview Part 1: RB & TE Rookies

You know, don't have so many red flags saying chances are he's pretty injured. And I'll just pass along the news. The Kansas City Star reporting Tyreek Hill's three-year-old son was recently removed from custody of Hill and the boy's mother. We don't know anything else as to whether that will affect or is any sort of news towards an ending to the Tyreek Hill saga. All it did was bring it back to the forefront of everybody's mind that there isn't an...

There's an investigation happening, both from the NFL side and from the authority side, into some sort of child abuse-related circumstances. Whether Hill's involved, whether he's not, we really don't know. But there is a cloud of uncertainty over Tyree Kills availability for the season, unfortunately, and it's going to be there until we get final word from the league.

All right, we're going to talk rookie running backs and tight ends on the show today, a little overview over some of the big names.

some of the names that you'll be drafting in your rookie drafts very soon. And we'll have rankings in the ultimate draft kit. Very close to after the NFL draft finishes. Yeah, there have been a lot of people that have pre-ordered and they're like, well, my rookie drafts coming up in a few weeks, where are the rankings?

They're going to be here after the NFL draft. Like Jason brought up, there isn't one team-proof wide-out, running back, tight-in that no matter where they land, you're going to have fantasy relevance. You need that right fit. You need the team moving up and grabbing the player they want, put them in the right position. And so we are going to bring up some of our favorite prospects, talk through the pros and cons that we've seen on film. And we'll start at the running back position with pretty much the –

unanimous top prospect at the position? I would say so. It does depend a little bit on what teams really need. But Josh Jacobs out of Alabama, 510, 211, three seasons at Alabama. Everybody looks at him as kind of the jack-of-all-trades, most explosive, most potentially effective running back coming into the NFL and expect him to go first among that running back group. But what are your guys' thoughts on what you saw in film from Josh Jacobs?

And the type of situation you'd like to see him in if you are a fantasy owner looking to draft him. Josh Jacobs is my favorite running back in this class. What is very unfortunate, though, about him is his production profile is very low. And this is because Alabama, they split the time. It was him and Damien Harris. Last year, only 120 carries, but that's turned that into 640 rushing yards.

What I love about Josh Jacobs is he is just an absolute nasty man. He is Shasta McNasty out there on the football field. And I liked how they utilized him in the passing game. I mean, all three years that he played, he was over 10 yards of reception. I mean, there was a particular play that turned everything around for me where it was they sent him down. They lined him up in line, had him run out like a...

Full-on-9 route. This is a seam route from a running back. Balls perfectly thrown over his head, pulls it in. I mean, it's similar. If you remember, some of those Cream Hunt catches against the Patriots where, like, there were these huge receptions. I mean, last year, 12.4 yards per reception, that's a huge number for a running back. So I love Josh Jacobs, the player. He doesn't fit into the mold of putting up the type of production. I like. That's why he's at least, he's not a...

slam dunk for a prospect because of that. Yeah, he actually reminds me of, and you guys know how much I liked Kenyon Drake coming out of college, but he's like exactly Kenyon Drake to me with one big difference, right, same school, same production model, same issues, the fact that he was, you know, kind of the reliever guy that comes in and was really efficient, good on special teams. I like both prospects. The difference is, are you going to be drafted enough to where you're given the ball enough? I still believe that if you gave Kenyon Drake,

250 plus touches on a season, you'd have a locked and loaded RB1. Did you mean drafted high enough to get? Right. So with Josh Jacobs, the rumor mill right now around mock drafts is that teams are even willing to maybe trade up to the teens to get them. I don't know that that's going to happen. But that's what it takes for me to love Josh Jacobs. Because when I watch a film, I love it. He's very talented. I like guys who can get to the outside. I like guys who can catch the ball. He can do both of those things. But the issue I have with him, and when I was first researching him,

Watching drafts and he's talking about all of his interviews, the number one question he has received from teams is, are you willing to share the rock? And his answer is like, definitely I think that's the right way to play. Yes, I'd like to play in the NFL. Well, but you could also have the response of like, I want to be the guy. I want to do whatever it's going to take to win, but I think I'm going to, you know, give me the rock and will win. My point is for fantasy, I worry that he's going to be drafted into a committee.

And he'll be a valuable committee player, but not a workhorseback, not someone worthy of being the 101. Two things. One, he never surpassed 120 carries in college. That was his junior season. Right. Never went over 640 yards on the ground. He's a versatile running back. The other thing is you hear rumors about Philadelphia and Indianapolis as two possible teams that are interested in Josh Jacobs. Well, if he steps into either of those situations, he has flat out a committee back instantaneously. There's no doubt about it. Jordan Howard, Marlon Mack, Naim Hines.

There are established players in those offenses. If you had to choose between Indianapolis and Philly to drop Josh Jacobs into that system, which would you choose? Indy. Indy. All right. Let's move on to David Montgomery out of Iowa State. David Montgomery, 511, 216, ran a 463, three seasons at Iowa State. What I like is the college production. I mean, he had a couple of big-time seasons in terms of...

You know, 258, 27 attempts in his last two seasons. I like his center of balance and that college production. I'm actually, I'm okay with David Montgomery. Where do you guys sit? You know, look, he is the one player. People ask me, you know, who's the guy that you find yourself disagreeing with the consensus on the most? And it would be David Montgomery. Oh, because, look, what? I.

He's well-rounded. You hear that, David? Yeah, he's well-rounded. He can do everything okay. But I don't feel like he's special at any of those things. And if he doesn't get the workhorse role in the NFL, I just don't think he's going to succeed. I mean, I go through, and I went back and watched film today because he was one of the earliest players I watched. And a lot of guys that I really respect their process, their film review, they love him. He's their number one guy. So I wanted to go back today and like,

I tried to put my positivity glasses on and watch him. And his production is great. You know, he's been a very productive guy at Iowa State, but I just didn't see traits to me that said, I'm going to be a star in the NFL. And when you're talking about the top, not the guys that are, you know, probably going to be fifth, six round picks, it's like.

I feel like he could be a workhorse. I think he could, too. I think his center of balance and his, you know, that was what impressed me the most. There are some of these players that I think rely on the quickness and the quick feet that I don't think are going to stand up to the NFL linebackers, interior linemen. I like the way he bounced off of players. Mike, what was your take on Montgomery? I'm more along with Jason that I watched him, and he could do it all, but it's just, there's nothing that's very inspiring about him.

thought of it as you were, Jay, you were like, well, he can do everything, but unless he gets a three-down roll, you're not going to be very happy with it. He's T.G. Yeldon, coming out of college, who was a very high draft pick. It was a second-round guy, had tons of production, could do everything, but. Isn't that how you felt about Chubb last year, though, too? Didn't come out with Top Speed, didn't come out with one thing that he looked like you could do? Chubb had, Chubb blew up the combine. I loved.

All right, Daryl Henderson out of Memphis, 5-9, 200 pounds. I guess at the combine, he weighed in a little heavier, right? Yeah, 2008. 208, 449. Incredible burst. Incredible college production, but playing at Memphis, 214 carries. Is that 1,909 yards? Yes, he is a beast. And 22 touchdowns. It's back-to-back seasons averaging 9 a carry out of Memphis. Sometimes you look at a player like Josh Jacobs, and you look at the limited...

like amount of work that they get to play in an SEC school where they get to play against the best, coach by the best, great offensive line. Then you look at, you know, we had, what, Rashad Penny last year at a San Diego state who had absolutely insane collegiate production. Didn't know how that would translate. I'm super curious about what you guys think about Henderson because for me, what I saw in film, if Henderson went to a far better destination,

than in Josh Jacobs, I would be in the Henderson camp pretty heavily. I think he's a very talented player. I think he fits today's NFL. Yeah, I'll let Mike talk the most about him because I know he has been a very big fan of Darrell Henderson. I liked what I saw. I think he is a faster breakaway version of Devonza Freeman. I think it might take him a year to put on some weight and be really prepared.

I do. I like most of his moves, his ability, his production. And, you know, when I watch him, he was one of the more talented guys. Reminded me more of Devonta Freeman quite a bit. But you're the guy who's been talking about. Yeah. I mean, you hit on really all the points that I love about him. He absolutely blows up my production model, lots and lots of green across the board, especially in the past catching area, which...

That's what I want to see. Now, he had the benefit of playing behind a very, very good offensive line. That certainly helped him, but he is just, he is so electric, and I hate to act to use that overused word for Darrell Henderson, because he deserves so much better. If only he were five pounds heavier, he would be my easy, number one, running back.

I think that he bulked up to 208. I think that his frame is probably close to maxed out. And it's not that he can't succeed. Like there's outlier running backs who weigh 205 and they succeed. It's just not that. They're outliers. Yeah, they're outliers. It's not as common as the guys who are the 215 areas. You guys know who it sounds like you're talking about right now. Who's that? From last season. Who were we talking about in similar vein in terms of?
