My Guy time plants the complete 2023 board

Jason wants 'My Guy time,' but the hosts explain that Andy's usual refusal makes those declarations special and stops every weekday from becoming its own time. The annual episode, running since 2015, is defined as nine flag-plant convictions that can produce major hits or misses. The final board assigns Andy Mike Evans, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Jahan Dotson; Jason Mark Andrews, Justin Fields, and Jordan Addison; and Mike Tyler Lockett, Chris Olave, and Darren Waller.

moment

The My Guys opener lives on Smithsonian 8mm film

Direct video visibly plays the deliberately dated My Guy film package. The desk admits it looks bad and declares it will never be updated; the fictional backstory sends a host to the Smithsonian each year to trade a bundle of tickets for an old 8mm reel and bring its 'great CGI' back to the show.

moment

Jason's Sam Howell belief depends on moon howling

The desk identifies Jason as a Sam Howell believer since college but questions whether the attraction is mostly the name. Asked if he would care as much without the chance to howl at the moon, Jason admits he would like the player less; a name like Jim Smith would make the same prospect a loser.

moment

UDK for Life costs two cents and perhaps one's pants

Deucer's Alley supports the yearly livestream giving away a UDK for Life, a signed Derrick Henry jersey, and a signed Tee Higgins mini helmet while the hosts answer listener questions. At the close, attendees are told to rip off their pants and dance at home—or check with HR at the office—and shaky back-of-the-napkin math turns 1.9 cents per episode into the show giving listeners its two cents.

moment

Beef Boy mutates into Wide Guy

Rico Dowdle is declared Dallas's only Beef Boy despite being only marginally beefy. Later, Mike introduces Chris Olave as his second Wide Guy, prompting the desk to retrieve the earlier term through Beef Eater and repeated Beef Boy corrections before deciding that a wide receiver can indeed be a Wide Guy.

moment

Tyler Lockett simply refuses to be hit

The hosts explain Lockett's longevity by personifying his contact avoidance: he catches the ball, announces 'you shall not hit me,' runs out of bounds, dives, or literally lies down. His philosophy is simply that he does not want hits in his life.

moment

Gibbs boards the cursed Abdullah Express

Andy describes Jahmyr Gibbs as exerting a gravitational pull in every mock draft, but selecting a Detroit running back reopens the show's history with the Abdullah Express and Kerryon Johnson. Challenged about the curse, Andy claims guts of steel, accepts that he is poking the bear, and declares himself brave as a Lion.

moment

Justin Fields overrules a month-long board lock

Jason reveals that Justin Herbert had been locked onto the My Guy board for the previous month. At the final decision he cannot leave off Justin Fields, so the lock opens and Fields takes the official slot.

moment

Al finds Dodson in the Jurassic Park console

As Andy reveals Jahan Dotson, production immediately fires 'Dodson, we've got Dodson here.' Andy thanks Al, Al answers, and the desk follows the Jurassic Park cue into a Dennis Nedry reference.

moment

Chris Howell makes an accidental lifetime-listener appearance

While discussing Sam Howell, a host accidentally says Chris Howell. The desk catches the mistake and turns it into a shoutout for Chris Howell, described as one of the show's longest lifetime listeners who has now made an appearance.

moment

Adam Thielen becomes a Weekend at Bernie's cardio corpse

Jason describes Minnesota's prior receiver role as occupied by a corpse. When another host notes Adam Thielen still finished as wide receiver 30, the image escalates to a lifeless vessel used for cardio in a Weekend at Bernie's arrangement while running the NFL's second-most routes.

moment

The new pass-block ledger exposes tight ends as wide receivers

Jason reveals that Mark Andrews has pass blocked only 27 times in five Ravens seasons and just once the prior year, making him the team's true wide receiver one. During Mike's Waller case, another host announces that this is apparently a stat the show can acquire and reports five pass blocks in nine games; the wink-wink wide-receiver argument returns before a delayed Waller drop is finally smashed.

moment

The Ducers receive a three-character opening card

Direct published video opens with a produced With the Ducers card that names and pictures Brooks as Judge Giamatti with a gavel, Jeremy as Owl Borland, and Kyle as The Borgognoni inside a monster-flower collar. The later transcript confirms that the Deucers are in the building for the UDK-for-Life livestream, but the card itself is the only verified appearance for Brooks and Kyle.

summary

Episode notes

The annual My Guys episode begins with Jason wanting another special 'time' declaration and the desk explaining why Andy's usual denial builds demand. The ritual is defined as nine strong flag-planting convictions, and the show says it has run the episode since 2015 with both major hits and misses. Its vintage video is deliberately never updated: the hosts imagine making a yearly Smithsonian trip, trading tickets for an old 8mm reel, and admiring its CGI. The final 2023 board is exact: Andy selects Mike Evans, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Jahan Dotson; Jason selects Mark Andrews, Justin Fields, and Jordan Addison; Mike selects Tyler Lockett, Chris Olave, and Darren Waller. Jason's established Sam Howell loyalty becomes explicitly name-dependent—he has believed since college but admits he would like a Jim Smith version less because Howell lets him howl at the moon. Jeremy answers as Al, is called Al Borland himself, and later fires the Jurassic Park-style 'Dodson, we've got Dodson here' cue on request. The desk briefly establishes Rico Dowdle as the only Beef Boy, then mislabels Chris Olave as a Wide Guy and scrambles back through Beef Eater and Beef Boy. Andy's Gibbs pick reopens Detroit-running-back trauma through the Abdullah Express and Kerryon Johnson before he claims guts of steel and bravery as a Lion. Jason displaces a month-long Justin Herbert lock with Justin Fields, showing that even a locked My Guy board can change. Other visual tangents turn Tyler Lockett into a receiver who simply lies down and refuses contact, Adam Thielen into a Weekend at Bernie's cardio corpse, and Mark Andrews and Darren Waller into wide receivers measured by their tiny pass-block totals. An accidental 'Chris Howell' invokes one of the show's longest lifetime listeners. Around the episode, Deucer's Alley supports a yearly UDK-for-Life livestream giveaway; the close asks winners to rip off their pants and turns dubious 1.9-cents-per-episode math into the show's 'two cents.'

Case closed. Case closed. On to you, Mike. He's the 2021 Bolitnikov Award winner. That's the best wide receiver in college football. That was when he was playing with Kenny Pickett. Just absolute astounding route runner, polished, ready for the NFL. You know, when it comes to drafting young players for fantasy, you're looking for a trifecta. You want draft capital. You want talent and you want opportunity. Well, the draft capital obviously is there. The Vikings took them 23rd overall, despite how desperately they need defensive players. They're like, this guy's too good. They also desperately needed a wide receiver, if we're being honest. The talent, to me, is very similar to Devontas Smith. When you're just another bulletinikoff Award winner, when you're just so good at.

54:41 ↗

route running, at setting up defenders, you've got great hands. In this modern NFL, this, you know, pass happy, timing, rhythm throwing, especially with a Kirk Cousin's style of quarterback, it's, he's perfect. He's perfect for this modern NFL. And one of the things that I actually kind of like, because I really liked him in my scouting process, is that the Vikings... took him because the Vikings are the same ones that scouted Justin Jefferson and they're like yeah that's the guy we want to target they look for certain traits that are similar and every single report about Addison I was I was reaching out to some of my Minnesota contacts as well every single report is he's he's outstanding the only knock on him was that he drove really really fast when he shouldn't have been in a car outside of that

55:35 ↗

The reports are glowing and awesome. Now let's look at the opportunity. Does he have the opportunity to step in? The Minnesota Vikings desperately needed to upgrade the corpse that was out there on the field last year. Adam Phelan, who finished as the wide receiver 30? It wasn't a terrible finish. Can a corpse do that? Well, he was a lifeless vessel for cardio. and, you know, like Weekend and Bernie's type of stuff. He ran the second most routes in the NFL last year, Adam Thieland did. In fact, he was tied for the third most routes run by a wide receiver over the last decade. He was out there on a pass happy offense. He saw 103 targets, meaning that he was only targeted on 15.2% of his routes, which is also known as...

56:31 ↗

dead last among players with 100 plus targets, dead last in targets per route run, dead last in yards per route run. There is a huge opportunity here for a talented young, ready for the NFL player to step into a role where you can have 100 plus targets. And I do want to, I do want to say this. I don't expect Jordan Addison. to hit the ground running. I don't even know that he will be in the Adam Thielen role come week one. When you're drafting Jordan Addison, he doesn't cost you much. He's behind Jahan Dotson in ADP. And you just talked about how nice that is. You're grabbing a player who I think by week three will have earned that role. The second half of the year, we see this with rookie wide receivers. Like if he finishes as the wide receiver 30 this season, Jordan Addison, it's going to be because the second half of the year, he's basically a top.

57:25 ↗

top 20 top 15 type of wide receiver it's funny somebody and i didn't i have no recollection of this whatsoever but somebody went on uh i think it was youtube or twitter and said you know they they were thanking us for the show and they said i followed indy's advice and picked up justin jefferson off the waiver wire a few years ago like there was a two week period of time in his entire career where that was a possibility that you could have done that I didn't even remember that that could have been done. But it was because Justin Jefferson took two weeks to get in there. And then he was Justin Jefferson. You mentioned that K.J. Osborne is ahead of him in the debt chart momentarily. My only question about Addison is going to be touchdowns. It's going to, you know, because he's not 6'2 like Adam Thielen was. And you have Hawkinson and Jefferson that, look, if I'm if I'm.

58:10 ↗

Kirk Cousins, I'm looking at those guys around the Red Zone right now ahead of Jordan Addison. But the coverage that's going to be drawn away from Jordan Addison, it's going to put defenders in a really, really tough spot where, you know, full PPR leagues, the offense without Dalvin Cook, like, let's not pretend. Alexander Madison is not going to do what Dalvin Cook could do in the passing game. Pump your brakes. Pump, pump the brakes over there. He's not. He's just not. Let's take it easy. It's not that good. All right. Let's take it easy. But yeah, I mean, that's my only fear that, you know, if Jordan Edison scores three times this year, would you be disappointed? Yeah, I think you'd be disappointed. Just for context here, since 2014, wide receivers drafted in the first round that played at least 12 games. They average 5.6 touchdowns. They average 100 targets, 854 receiving yards. Basically, they average being the wide receiver 30 statistically around there. But again, it doesn't come.

59:08 ↗

over the course of the whole season. You get like a more potent version of that player towards the end of the year. And it is worth holding on to those rookies over the last couple of years. We just see it over and over and over where these rookie wide receivers are making big fantasy impacts at the end of the year. There's also the chance that he does hit the ground running. Right. There's a chance the week one. We're all going, oh, my gosh, like this guy was basically in the undrafted category or getting close to it in the 10th round. And then you're very happy.

59:37 ↗

And things like concussion protocol and speeding tickets can drive a price down. Yeah. All right, Mike, you get to round out our final my guy of the show. Darren Waller. So no disrespect to my esteemed colleague over here with his Mark Andrews love because I totally understand it. But Darren Waller has become my favorite pick at the tight end position. Mark Andrews, third rounder. Then you have Darren Waller right now on Sleeper going at the back of the sixth round. The last two years for the Walleris have been not great. He's had injury problems. He's only appeared in 20 games. But let's look at the situation now. The New York Giants gave up a third round pick to get Darren Waller. They weren't worried about the injuries. They weren't worried about the age.

60:31 ↗

And then look at what else is going on for the New York Giants? Who is the wide receiver one for the New York Giants? We did this experiment, I think a couple weeks ago, and it was just, there's so many names that it could be the wide receiver one for that team. It might just be Darren Waller. And here's what we've seen for the tendencies for Daniel Jones. Since Daniel Jones was drafted in 2019, The Giants wide receivers have seen less than 60% of their targets every year, 59, 56, 57, and then last year, 51. That was 30th in the NFL. They're just not throwing it to the wide receivers because they, again, who is the number one wide receiver out there that just demands targets? I'm not saying that they're bad players out there, but you don't have a true number one. It's the go-to receiver mentality. It's the I need a first down.

61:29 ↗

I need a big play. There hasn't been a player that's kind of your go-to receiver in New York yet. Yeah, you don't have a player who goes in the huddle, and as they're calling the play, it can be like, no, you're throwing me the ball, and then your quarterback's like, oh, all right, you got it, Devante Adams. This ball's coming to you, my friend. And I do need to give you breaking news since this is apparently a stat we can acquire. Darren Waller blocked five times last year. So when you talk about drafting a wide receiver, what? Wink, wink. These numbers are insane. Pass, pass blocking. Yeah, to be clear. You did only have nine games. Yeah, pass block. But here's what's so important about that wide receivers seeing less than 60% of the targets. Because that means, going back to 2014, those teams have averaged a 24% target share for the tight end one position. How does that do? A 24% target share? Well.

62:24 ↗

Since 2015, we've seen 19 tight ends that have had a 24% target share, minimum 14 games played. All 19 of them finished in the top five. Now, Darren Waller is being drafted right at that. It's a monumentally large sample size. I mean, it's Jordan Reed, Walker, Greg Olson, of course, Travis Kelsey, Zach Ertz, Mandrews is in there. And then Darren Waller is in there a couple times because when he was with the Raiders. He saw 24% and he saw 28% of the targets. The age is not a, it's not a concern. 31 years old, it's, look, it's nothing for the tight end position. We have a sensational article up by our own marvelous Marvin, where he talked about the life cycle of the dynasty tight end. I recommend going and checking that out, the fantasy footballers.com. And then training camp, again, try not to get too hot and bothered by training camp quotes, but the quotes for Darren Waller have been.

63:22 ↗

You at least want validation. Unpreventable. Yeah, you can't avoid him. You at least want validation in camp that the player looks like the player they're acquired. It could be going the other direction in terms of like Walters not heavily involved or the age is showing. So we have, we referenced this tweet from Connor Hughes just the other day, but appears the Giants have taken Darren Waller out, some say for a breather, I think it's the force Daniel Jones to throw elsewhere. And then a quote from the athletic, this is my eighth season covering the Giants. There are only three offensive players who simply moved.

63:51 ↗

different on the field than that made teammates take notice. Odo Beckham, Sequan Barkley, and now add Darren Waller to that study. The beat reporters are madly in love. It seems like Daniel Jones is madly madly in love. Manly in love. We saw rookie Daniel Bellinger make some splash plays here or there when that didn't seem like a player who should be put in that position. And the Giants said, yeah, we're going to upgrade that and we're going to make that a focal point of our offense. So Darren Waller going in the back of the sixth is someone to me that could. Oh, there we go. I mean, people must have been not listening to a word you said saying, how in the world was that drop not smashed? I believe that Darren Waller can easily challenge Mark Andrews for the tight end two position by the end of the year. At a discount. Add a discount relative to him. It's like.

64:47 ↗

You've been saying discount Kelsey is Andrews. Discount Andrews is Waller. Discount Waller. We don't want to talk about that. Discount Waller is Tyler Higby. Okay. A ton of targets. Discount Higby. Well, Jake Ferguson. All right. That trickle down. We can stop it. Mike Evans, Jamir Gibbs, Johan Dodson, my three my guys. Jason went with Mark Andrews, Justin Fields, and Jordan Addison. And Mike rounded it out with Tyler Lockett. Chris Olivae and Darren Waller. Waller was certainly on my short list when I was looking for that third guy, you know, throwing out some like quick names of players we were considering down the stretch, like Jason's Justin Herbert, you know, was in the shortlist. It was tough for me to decide between Jamir Gibbs, James Cook, and Joe Mixing. All three of those players I was looking at closely.

65:42 ↗

along with Debo and Iyuk, which we'll talk about later this offseason. Those are kind of some of the other guys that were in contention for me. Sure. I'll throw out my short list, of course, involved Alexander Madison, as I'm sure people at home are screaming for. Zay Flowers is very much on that short list for me. And then I don't know if you've, you have sensed my agitation over the off season for J.K. Dobbins continually. to hold out, be hurt, whatever it is. Yeah, you really believe it. And my relief that he was finally back on the field this week. But it was just, I don't have enough yet from J.K. Dabas to know that he's truly ready to go. But he was on my short list. Yeah, I definitely wanted Justin Herbert. I wanted Chris Olavay, but he was on your board forever. Yeah, he was, he's been up there, I don't know, since like.

66:32 ↗

April. He's so good. And Tara McLaurin, I love, but, you know, wide receiver one. Can't go, yeah, the wide receiver one in fantasy football. Well, that means you got Howl at one at quarterback and you got McLaren at one at wide receiver. That's right. Yeah. What could go wrong? Cole Turner. Is he your tight-in one? For sure. He's got Sam Howl at quarterback. Okay, it makes sense. Howl? All right, one final reminder. This is going to be your last chance to enter to win the ultimate draft kit for life along with a signed Derek Henry Jersey and a T. Higgins autograph mini helmet. We're going to pick three separate winners. We're going to do it today. All you have to do to enter is pick up the 2023 UDK or UDK Plus by 6.30 p.m. Eastern today. Tune into the live stream. And if you can't tune in, guess what? That's okay.

67:16 ↗

We're picking one of the people that have purchased this year and we'll let you know. We'll email you. You can still win. I mean, we'll be a little bit disappointed in you. Yeah, that you're not there. You'll be disappointed. You'll be disappointed in yourself. Because you didn't get to like hear it live and then. So be there. Rip your pants off and dance around the house. I don't need these anymore. Or the office. Yeah. Or the office. Yeah. We'll check with HR. Ultimate draft kit.com. And here, I don't want to bury the lead here. Yes, you could win a UDK for life. But also by getting the UDK. You get the UDK. You get the UDK.

67:46 ↗

Which, look, I was doing some, like, back of the napkin math this morning for the amount of shows that we put out and the cost of the UDK. And it equated to like 1.9 cents per episode of what you'd be paying to get the UDK into your life, which will help you with your draft and support the podcast. For just 1.9 cents. Yeah. And that math was, again, back of the napkin. We'll call it two. We'll call it two cents. It could be wrong. It could be completely wrong. I think it might be wrong. We're giving you our two cents in the UDK. Nice. Hope you enjoyed the My Guys episode, but guess what? We're back with five more episodes next week. See you on the live stream this afternoon on YouTube. Goodbye. Goodbye. Thank you for listening to another episode of the Fantasy Footballers podcast.
