Fantasy Football Podcast 2015 - Mailbag Episode, Guest: Christopher Harris

dealing with is the Jordy Nelson out Randall Cobb fears obviously now Cobb reports this morning say very likely to be back week one but uh you know we know Devante Adams is is worth owning and could have a really good year but from the Janice Montgomery side of things where are you leaning from what you see because we like Montgomery over here yeah I have them ranked side by side still because I'm still waiting for some sort of clarity I don't ever want to believe the reports coming out of camp

because it's just people talking and it doesn't mean anything. And, you know, the Cobb injury was bad primarily because it was Cobb and we were super freaked out that, you know, third play of the game or whatever, he hurt his shoulder. You know, secondarily it was bad because I wanted to see who was going to shine between Janice and Montgomery. Montgomery played those first few snaps and Janice didn't, but I don't know if that was like an indication of the depth chart. And once Cobb was out, they both were in there. Plus, they weren't even catching passes from Aaron Rogers.

You know, in terms of skills, the guy who I wish would win it would be Janice, because I find him to be a little bit more like Jordy. He's got the outside size. He has better deep speed. He's not Jordy. He's not experienced. He's not going to win at all three levels the way Jorny does. But, you know, and plus the fact that he hasn't taken this job just by the neck and kept it means he's maybe just not ready. Montgomery from the very beginning was termed as kind of a rocked up Randall Cobb. You know.

very good athlete, smart kid, was instantly going to be able to be plugged in as an offensive weapon the way he was at Stanford, but maybe not superimposing. And so if he winds up being the guy, you know, I'm going to have, I'm going to roster them. You know, I think they probably both can be rostered in all leagues right now. I think he has a lower ceiling than Janus would if Janice had a clue. But it sounds like you guys think, you know, maybe a little bit more of Montgomery than I do. We were kind of marveling at, you know,

the way things work out for certain players in the draft. You know, so much of a career is not just, you know, where you go on the draft, but where you go as a team. And it's an amazing thing that Montgomery can get drafted in the third round, be looking at Aaron Rogers as a quarterback, and then have the Jordy injury and have the opportunity that he has. I mean, and so we'll see if he runs away with it. Where do you have Adams, though? What's his upside to you? I mean, he has so much upside. I think we may have talked about Adams.

At some point, maybe on my show, we talked about him, but I have him 17 among wide receivers. I have him really high. But obviously, I admit, the chasm of his downside is, you know, he could just disappear. We don't know. I thought he was okay last year. There's some things he did really, really well. I thought he was always where he was supposed to be route running wise. He's not a super athlete. He's not going to have supersized, but he was good enough. He had hands problems for sure.

And, you know, who knows why Aaron Rogers, you know, keeps talking him up so much, but he does. I guess I've taken the bait. Is 17 way too high for you guys? No, we've not at all. Our consensus ranking has them at 19, so we're... Okay. I took him on Sunday night in one of our big leagues, and I took him right after Jeremy Macklin. It's a three-keeper league, but I took him in the second round. And I'm excited about the upside. I mean, there's such an unknown there, but that, you know, when Aaron Rogers is mixed in, that is exciting. Yeah.

It is, and plus, I mean, it's not even, you know, Randall Cobb, I think, might be the safest player in fantasy this year as long as he stays healthy, so all props to Randall Cobb. But he's going to play out of the slot and out of the backfield. I mean, the number one outside threat almost has to be Devante Adams. That's a huge role. So we're going to move to running backs. We'll speed these up a little bit for you. The Cowboys situation.

Randall got the start, but there's, and we know you like to ignore camp news, but there's a building buzz somehow, some way Darren McFadden has managed to build a buzz. What are your thoughts right now of the cowboy situation? It's come on, really, Dan McFadden? Really? Joseph Randall's being overdrafted by a million. Don't get me wrong. I mean, taking him in the second or third round is criminal, insane.

But if I'm betting between those guys, I'll bet on Randall because the other one's Darren McFadden. But, I mean, I think there's a chance the leading rush or the Cowboys still isn't on that roster. You know, it's not going to be McFadden. I just, maybe it will be. I'll eat these words, but boy. It sure doesn't seem like it should be. No.

But they just are not bringing anybody else in yet. And we've been kind of speculating on that for a while. So what about the Patriots running back situation with Blunt missing the first game, not looking superb? You know, we know that it's a murky third down situation. I mean, is there just anybody you can grab onto there? Or are you just as dumbfounded as we are? Trashbag Central for Legeriblunt.

He is just, he's garbage. Not a good football player. He's got size and, you know, he's a total frontrunner. When they're up 30, he's a, he's a dominant player. I mean, he will rack up 180 yards when they're up 30. But they, you know, get to a third and two. I just happen to be a Patriots fan. You may notice.

They get to third and two. Legarin's getting stuffed. I don't have the number in front of me, but there's some crazy number of times he's gotten a handoff from the three-yard line, and he scored like six times. He's just... I remember watching him, and people talk about him as a goal I'm back, and just saying...

What is your definition of a goal line back? Don't they have to cross the goal line? He gets the ball at the goal line. Just being big gets you a reputation as a goal line back for years. Well, in his defense, I think he's averaged one touchdown per game over the last two seasons with the Patriots. I would say that's a goal line type of guy when you get a touchdown. I just saw the same thing Chris saw. Yeah, I see it on film. I want to know who if you have to pick one, only one for the whole year. It's best ball.

The pass catching back for the Patriots is who? You know, Brandon Bolden. Yeah, that's kind of where we've been leaning. Because that's the person who's been there for the longest and he's the one who's actually played. So there's trust there that he's not going to completely screwed up, get Brady killed, you know, drop a million balls. James White doesn't seem to be able to put it together. He looks great when he's not in pads. You know, he's a really good athlete.

You know, what Dionne Lewis, I'm not... Yeah. Sorry. And so we're a year past the snooze gate up there for Jonas Gray, and we think he's going to start in week one. Any chance that he wrestles that starting big down back roll away from LaGarrett? Yeah.

Definitely there's a chance. And that's what, you know, it's New England. Of course there's a chance. Right. We have to go back to the pre-Benzharvis Green Ellis days for people to remember what it was like to play fantasy with the Kevin Fox of the world and the Lawrence Moronies of the world, you know, six or seven years ago. Every single week it would be different. And I think we have to be prepared for that possibility. Even if Jonas Gray sets another record, there's a chance he gets benched the next week because, you know, he might be a little bit of a knucklehead.

I don't want to use that backfield. I know people get tempted by blunt. I'm not using them. I was kind of, you bring up Kevin Falk. When I thought about Fred Jackson and the possibility of him signing over in New England and being used kind of all over the place, I kind of hoped to see what they would do with Fred Jackson, but it doesn't look like that's going to materialize. So, um,
