Brooks curates a playoff-valid studio wall

Brooks's careful studio curation is tested against playoff eligibility. Waddle, Josh Allen, the Mighty Ducks, and Jacksonville survive inspection; DeAndre Swift remains by Mike because the Lions eliminated Green Bay, and Mike is told he and Swift must finish the postseason together.

moment

Al hitches his wagon to Kyle's final Faceoff loss

The hosts clarify that Kyle lost the final producer Fantasy Faceoff and Al merely hitched his wagon to him. The Owl is compared to Back to the Future's chicken trigger because he cannot turn down any bet, no matter what is proposed.

moment

The hosts accidentally-on-purpose start shame early

The desk declares itself in charge but says the rest-of-show costume rule is above the hosts and chiseled in stone. They then 'accidentally' hit Fantasy Faceoff early, watch Slack fill with insults, and tell the producers that the long mailbag means the timing is now out of everyone's control.

moment

Producer cosplay gives Kyle the Owl and Al the Borgogan

Kyle spins past Mighty Ducks, pirates, and Spartans to land on producer cosplay. The producers dress as each other: Kyle receives a comfortable Owl mask, while Al squeezes into a rubber Borgogan face, asks whether his face is straight, and immediately makes suffocation part of the episode.

moment

Deucer Cam becomes an employment-surveillance feed

Mask removal is declared a firing offense even when Deucer Cam is off screen, and Brooks is ordered to cut back randomly. The feed checks Al for a medical problem, later catches him drinking through the eye mesh, and records his explanation that he obeys because he needs a job.

moment

The 2022 Faceoff ledger crowns Mike

The season closes with exact loss totals: Andy ten, Mike four, and Jason three. Mike also owns double-digit first-place finishes and is formally declared the year's DraftKings winner.

moment

The office beats foosball

Asked what happens off mic, the hosts describe rankings, app, and UDK work, then claim they only stopped playing foosball because they became too good, leveled into the Hall of Fame, and beat the game before pickleball took over.

moment

Jason explains the original host chair

Jason says he neither asks nor wants to host now, but his microphone experience made him the host at launch when Andy's father was effectively the entire audience. Andy began as color analyst, then built such a long Iron Man streak that Jason's eventual substitution simply restored an old role. Mike says he arrived expecting to host for levity but now calls Andy world-class.

moment

Spanish class, MySpace, and a CD-ROM build the Footballers

Freshman Andy meets junior Jason in Spanish, where Jason is already the room-taking comedian. Fantasy basketball follows, including Jason receiving Shawn Marion while Andy takes Rik Smits. They reconnect through Jason's MySpace game company; Andy joins, the business moves into Facebook and iOS games, and fresh graduate Mike is hired as audio engineer after presenting at an IGDA meeting and handing over sweet music on a CD-ROM. Nearly a decade of work and workplace fantasy football leads directly to the show.

moment

Calling Mighty Ducks fine wounds Kyle

During the sports-movie answers, a host repeatedly calls the Mighty Ducks merely fine, then admits the opinion is only bait because saying it makes Kyle die a little inside. The crew confirms that it does.

moment

The show chooses focus over fantasy-sports expansion

The hosts say fantasy basketball was considered because it began Andy and Jason's relationship and all three love the NBA. They stayed football-only to remain sharp, accurate, and undiluted, while leaving open a future expansion through other talent. A listener's Borg-and-Betz proposal is rejected because the company would still need to find talent.

moment

The Footie URL prolongs Al's suffocation

The show previews Tuesday's Footie Award winners and asks Brooksie for the voting URL. Brooks answers, but the hosts belabor whether Footie ends in I-E or Y and explicitly admit they are making the close longer for Al.

summary

Episode notes

A direct-video opening card introduces the Deucers' alter egos: Brooks as gavel-wielding Judge Giamatti, Jeremy as hammer-carrying Owl Borland, and Kyle as the monster-collared Borgogon. Brooks opens as the studio's playoff-wall curator, surrounding the desk with Josh Allen, Jalen Waddle, the Mighty Ducks, a Jaguars helmet, and DeAndre Swift, whom Mike is ordered to keep watching after their fantasy season ends. The episode then turns the final Deucer's Alley Fantasy Faceoff loss into an extended punishment. Al hitched his wagon to Kyle because the Owl cannot turn down a bet; the hosts deliberately trigger the segment early, insist that the rest-of-show costume rule is above even them, and watch the producer Wheel land on producer cosplay. Kyle receives a comfortable Owl sleep mask, while Al wears a tiny rubber Borgogon face with eye mesh but no breathing holes. Deucer Cam repeatedly checks the punishment: mask removal means firing, Al asks whether his face is straight, needs a snorkel, is checked for a medical emergency, drinks through the mesh, and says he needs the job. Direct-video checks confirm that the masks remain on through the later producer shots. The final season ledger gives Andy ten Faceoff losses, Mike four, and Jason three, while Mike earns the DraftKings crown with double-digit first-place finishes. The AMA supplies substantial show history. The office says it retired from foosball only after leveling into the Hall of Fame and beating the game. Jason explains that his earlier microphone experience made him the original host when Andy's father was effectively the only listener; Andy began as the color analyst and built an Iron Man attendance streak, while Mike joined expecting that he might host but now calls Andy world-class. The founders then tell the longer origin: Andy met older junior Jason in freshman Spanish, Jason exploited him in fantasy basketball by trading Rik Smits for Shawn Marion, and they later reconnected through Jason's MySpace-to-Facebook-game business. That company needed an audio engineer, so recently graduated Mike handed over music on a CD-ROM at an IGDA meeting and joined the pair for nearly a decade of video-game work before their shared fantasy-football habit became this show. Kyle's Mighty Ducks devotion is tested when a host calls the movie merely fine, explicitly because that makes Kyle die a little inside. Finally, the hosts say they considered fantasy basketball but kept a football-only focus to avoid dilution; when a listener proposes Borg and Betz for another sport, the desk says it would still need to find talent. The closing Deucer Cam shows Kyle comfortably watching while Al still suffocates, and the hosts stretch the Footie Awards URL explanation specifically to prolong Al's punishment.

Jason has never asked to host. Don't need to. Don't desire to. The reason I... Some footcasts. I jump over to host is when the show first started long, long ago when the only people that listened to it were my parents and Andy's parents. Right. Because we were just my dad. My mom said no. Yeah. No, I know. When I say parents, I also mean... Not my parents. I mean, Andy's father was our only list. Right, right. We didn't know what the format of the show should be. I had a little bit more microphone experience. So I started as the host. And Andy did what I do now as the, you know, what I guess the color analyst. I don't know what's. Get picks wrong, bad takes. Yeah. You know, lose DFS contests on a weekly basis. So I just, I had done it before. And it was the, Andy was it.

28:55 ↗

The beginning of the show, Andy was the Iron Man. Like his streak before he finally missed a show was a very, very long time. And we never even considered it. And it was, oh, crap, Andy's going to miss the show. What do we do? And it was, well, I've hosted before. So I guess I'm going to do it. And then that's just what we went with. What's funny is. You know, one of the things when I first entered. So if you don't know the origin story, before we like officially launched for a full season, you guys had a couple of weeks doing the show prior to my involvement at all at finishing out one of the seasons. We call those the golden years of the podcast. And when I came on board, when, you know, when the offseason hit and I was coming on, I genuinely thought.

29:42 ↗

that I was going to be the host. Not because we ever discussed that, but I figured you two, you know, let you guys would just have me come in and host bring some levity and you guys would do what you were doing. And it just didn't work out that way. And I don't give two farts. I don't, I don't think I could do as good a job as Andy, though. I think you're a world-class host and you're perfect for the role. Thanks. You're welcome. Thank you. That's nice of you to say. I think. You would do worse than Andy and worse than me. Well, thank you, mine. It means a lot coming from you. Jason did host the DFS podcast one time this year. Is that true? And you hit on a big bet that week. I think it was the Kamara TD bet like multi multi TDs. Yeah. Owl. You're okay. Oh man. He's just shaking his head. Honestly, honestly, Jeremy, you look really stupid.

30:39 ↗

You look so dumb. You look as dumb as you feel. You look. I feel great. Oh, man. Now, what material is that mass? Is that pure cloth? Because I hope it is. Oh, no. This is rubber. Oh, no. That's rubber? What's in the middle, though? Isn't that cloth? There's a mesh. Yeah, there's a little bit of mesh, but it's where my eyes are, not where my breathing holes are. How does it smell? How does it smell? Yeah, what's the aroma in there? It smells like me. Oh, no. There's a lot of me in here. I thought it was going to smell bad like plastic. I didn't realize it was going to smell that bad. Oh, man. All right. Here's a good question. Adam wants to know our favorite sports movie of all time, which ironically, you did talk about the shirt that talked about Remember the Titans, which was one of my favorite sports movies growing up for sure. Remember the Titans is up there. My favorite sports movie.

31:34 ↗

I like the funny ones far more than the emotional, uplifting ones. And I think it's rookie of the year. Oh, dude, what a good answer. That's not mine. But I do love that. And it's from the same kind of time period. Where are those movies? Where are the kids getting the superpowers and beating the adults at the sports? We need to bring that back. That certainly needs to come back. I was going to go with Doc McStuffins now. I'm going to go with the Sandlot. So similar time period. Is Jerry McGuire a sports movie? Does that an answer that you can set? If it is. And, you know, I think it is to some degree. Like the same way that you can make the die hard as a Christmas movie argument, Jerry McGuire, he's a sports agent dealing with sports stars or football. And it's up. I mean, it would be up there then. I think Field of Dreams is my answer, though. Okay. Field of dreams. The natural.

32:32 ↗

Anybody over there seen The Natural before? I'm sure. Nope. I'm sure Kyle's seen The Natural. Oh, for sure. Robert Redford? Yeah, buddy. That's a good movie. And everybody wants. Oh, yeah. Water Boy is very good. So you guys go for the comedy. Yes. And I want the, like, my favorite part of those movies is the winning the game moment. You want the goosebumps. It's the not, you know, the Rudy. Yeah, Rudy's a good one. The walk off home run. That moment. Okay. Because I, you know, we all wanted to be that person. Sure. I wanted to be a rookie of the year. Yeah, I wanted to. That's true though. Some party you believe that could happen after you watch that movie. Oh, it definitely did where you're like, as a kid, your risk meter kind of went up a little bit of, well, I'm willing to do this. I could probably get hurt. But if I get hurt, what happens if I get a cannon for an arm?

33:27 ↗

Yeah, I mean. I go straight to the pros. Now, what happened in the movie? He broke his arm and then he was in a cast. And when he got out of the cast, he had super pitching. Yeah, the ligaments were extra tight. I don't know. And then obviously, yeah, Mighty Ducks. I mean, come on. Mighty Ducks is great. It's fine. It's fine. It's fine. Really? You only think it's fine. I'm only saying that to poker. I'm only saying that because I know that if you ever say Mighty Ducks is fine, Kyle dies a little bit inside. Yeah. Yeah, he does. Instagram question from Paul. Do you have any pets?

33:56 ↗

We have a golden doodle named Copper. He's a rascal. Two golden doodles. Oh, yeah, double how good you are. Double the poop. Rocky Sugar and then a little toy poodle named Pepper. And I have two Bernadoodles. I have Daisy and Rufus. And Rufus is a tank. Mike, how many cats you got? Oh, child, please. Andy, any cats? No. Okay, me, no cats. Yeah, we do have some cat people in this office, which. We, I mean, what's that. They're different. We're working through it. They were raised differently. Different morals. All right. Let's go here with Instagram. Dan wants to know. Keep trade cut. Okay. All right. Motterella sticks. Ooh. Waffle fries. Oh. Fried pickles. Hmm. Easy. Fried pickles gets the cut. And I'm sure we're all going to say that. The problem with fried pickles is not that they don't taste good.

34:54 ↗

The problem is they are not consumable in the vast quantity that the other two are. I will eat a couple fried pickles, but I don't want 50 fried pickles. No, no one does. I love pickles and I love fried pickles. The problem I thought you were going to go with with fried pickles is when you bite into a fried pickle, it has... murdered your face with heat. I mean, whatever they do when they fry a pickle, it makes it molten lava inside is the hottest. It's probably when they drop it in the boiling oil. Well, they do it with potatoes and french fries. They don't just stay. There's a temperature issue. Yes, there's a massive temperature issue. And mozzarella sticks. Is that your answer? All right.

35:36 ↗

This is a really difficult one. I'm keeping the waffle fries, trading the moths, sticks, and cutting the Now, are you doing that based off of just enjoyment? Yes. Or not like, because I feel like the ramifications of eating too many mozzarella sticks are worse than the waffle fries. And we have reached the ramification ages. Yes. Yeah, there is pain involved, but like, speaking of pain. How are you doing it? Doing good. All right. Good. Are you texting a final goodbye to your wife? Is that what was going on? That's right. If you can get a truly top tier mozzarella stick versus the top tier of waffle fries, the mott sticks. Do I get some ranch with the fries? With either. Yeah, with the mott sticks, you get ranch and mariner. You get both. Yes, absolutely. Because we're sophisticated. I think, I think at the end of the day, with no ramifications considered, I'm going, I'm taking the mott sticks. I'm taking the mott sticks. I'm taking the mott sticks.

36:33 ↗

But not, I mean, I'll trade the waffle fries for a haul, multiple firsts. And I'm going to keep some. Yeah. I'm not giving you the whole thing. Instagram question from Jake wants to know how did we all meet, which is a question we get from time to time. Definitely every time we do an AMA type of show. But we go way back. I mean, I am, I'll tell you, I'm 38 years old. Mike is 39 and Jason is more than that. By one. For Jason, to help Jason out, I'm 39 for like under two months. Yeah. There you go. Welcome to my club. Yeah. I'm, say, I'm barreling down. Jason and I met in high school. Jason's a couple of years older than me. I'm in the 30s and he's older. Not. But we met in a freshman Spanish class. I was the freshman. Right. In the class.

37:28 ↗

I was the junior taking freshman Spanish because I had put it off for as long as I could. Which was so fun because, you know, every freshman, this is, you know, first semester freshman year, you're nervous as heck. Like every freshman is little and scared and they don't know what high school's like. And here's Jason who was like king of town who was already the comedian, who was already the theater guy, the comedy guy, the improv guy. And there's a bunch of freshmen in there. And this one doofus that's just making everybody laugh. That was my class. And, yeah, he just took it over. And we actually started playing fantasy basketball together. He took advantage of me in some trades. Oh, yeah. Was that Rick Smith? One, including Rick Smith and Sean Marion, as I learned fantasy basketball. The Matrix was undefeated for fantasy. Guess who received Sean Marion? Yeah. So I'm the guy who traded for Rick Smith. Yeah. And so we met in high school.

38:26 ↗

After high school, Jason had a business doing, basically it was, first it was in MySpace, then it was in Facebook gaming and iOS gaming. And just through, I don't know, happenstance, we ended up reconnecting over MySpace, I believe. Yeah. I just sent you a note saying, how you doing? Did you get to that college? Yeah. That's how you let people know how old you are. Right, that we were reconnecting on my space. Well, that was the company that I ran at that time. And then Andy came on board. Yep. We grew it to very nice proportions and shifted with social media over to eventually Facebook gaming. And when we were making video games, we needed an audio engineer, someone that could make incredible music. And I needed a job. And Mike needed a job. I think.

39:17 ↗

Was I giving a speech at a... You were. You was at the IGDA meeting, and you were the head honcho. You were the presenter, which means that you had already made something of your life. And you... Mike hadn't. No, I was fresh out of college. You gave me some sweet music on a CD-ROM. And I listened to that. On your CD player. Yes. And I knew right then. I was like, we've got to get this guy. He's the guy. To give a job, too. For the new game we're making. And then we all work together for the better part of a decade of running that business. Yeah, it's actually funny. I just texted Jason this morning that I think I hit a longer time here with the footballers than when we did the video games. But we played a lot of fantasy football and spent a lot of time on fantasy football at that other job. And that was history. We started it up and here we are doing this.

40:16 ↗

Okay, let's go here, a Twitter question from, well, Instagram question from Alex. Do you guys collect sports cards? Nope. No, it did as a kid as, I mean, that had to be an overwhelming majority of kids. I was, it was my single biggest hobby growing up. It was by far my favorite thing to do, buying packs, going to, it seemed like cards were like somehow more prevalent back then, which I know they're huge now. But, like, people would sell them out of their garage, like garage sales with boxes of cards and card sales. And I'd go to card auctions and collect Jason Kid cards and Grant Hill. And let's just date ourselves as often as we can. And as you were saying this, like, we're not getting into NFTs, right? We're not good, bad, whatever. But.

41:07 ↗

And what are they overvalued or or what? Let's go to that camera again. We're just going to check to the deuces roll. Why he's trying to take a drink. Oh my gosh, taking a drink. Are you through the mesh? He's thirsty. He knows you can't take that mask off or he gets fired. Yeah, I need a job. So for all the people out there who are, you know, like against saying though the NFTs, they're worth absolutely nothing. When we were little, you know who was telling us? that our baseball cards were going to pay for our future and our college educations, the adults. That's who was telling us to spend all of our money on those things. That's funny to think about. This is, this is it. This is your future in this binder. Keep them safe. Keep those corners sharp because that car is going to be worth a ton of money. Then they weren't. Not most of them. That's funny to think about though. Yeah, I have, I tried to get back into it a little bit. Like I got some, uh,

42:02 ↗

I think last year and during the playoffs, I bought up some Joe Burrow rookies and stuff like that. But it's hard. It's not as fun. When you're a kid, you're scraping and crawling for like a few bucks to buy one pack. That's what made it fun. That pack is so valuable. It's a different collecting experience when you're an adult. You just buy all the carts. Trying to tell your wife what you're buying. Instagram question from Daniel wants to know our favorite genre of food. Genre of I've never heard food referred to as genre. Is that like saying like Italian or Mexican food or because mine's American. Yeah. Because burgers, fries, mac and cheese. Those are my three food groups. Yeah. Pizza. I mean, that's. Yeah. You're saying American pizza. Sure. I'll go Japanese. I love sushi. Yeah. Sushi is my favorite.

42:58 ↗

food, my favorite dinner, um, you can go healthy, you could go delicious. And then I love the appetizers. There's no overlap. No, there really isn't in life. There is no overlap between actually healthy and actually delicious. And mine is Mexican food. Really? Oh, yeah. Okay. So like all of it? Like, uh, itchiladas and toastas and burritos. Yes. Okay. All of it. I wasn't sure if that was allowed to be, like if you grow up in Arizona, there's a lot of authentic Mexican food all around us. So when people travel here, they'll ask for like, where's the best Mexican food restaurant because they don't have maybe as much authentic Mexican food. But I wasn't sure if it was one of those things where like people also travel here and like buy up a bunch of southwestern decor. But we grew up with all that and we despise it. You've never abandoned it. Like real Mexican food.

43:52 ↗

The fake Americanized Mexican food is salt delicious. Taco Bell. Delicious. That's true. CJ Ospac wants to know. Have you ever thought about branching out into other fantasy sports or maybe just making Borg and Betts do it? It's, it has been considered and then we went now, man. Reconsidered. Yeah. In the very beginning, we question because, you know, like Andy said, we. started out playing fantasy basketball. That was the beginning of our relationship. We all three love basketball, love the NBA. And so we did think about it, but we wanted to stay sharp and not dilute what we're doing and be able to have focus and grow the fantasy football to be the best, most accurate entity we could. Yeah, yeah, you're right. And you can only do so much well. And we knew what it would take to make this show.

44:49 ↗

what it has become and what we want it to be moving forward so yeah there's always the possibility that we we would branch out with maybe other talent doing that um not not impossible to see that happening but but if you're talking like borg and bets we still have to find talent that can do it right we're looking so uh if you're out there let us know Oh, yeah, that's what you want to say. Speaking note. Yeah, welcome to email overload. Also, speaking of Borg, I'm really like, you have it so. We're going to the deucers cam and talk about how bad. All right. He's smiling has it.

45:23 ↗

He looks like an owl. I look good. It's just a math. I get it. I get a look good. You have a comfy sleep mask on. That's all you're doing. You're just chilling there. And now because of the mask, you can't really help with anything on the show. We can't throw to you for much. So you are just literally front row watching the fancy footballers with a comfy owl mask on. And Al is wearing a Borgogan mask. And it's less comfortable because of the mesh and the suffocation. And the size. I can't get past how small it looks. Yeah, that's not for a grown man. No, either that or you've got a huge head. Maybe a little of both. Yeah. All right. I think that's going to wrap it up. We wanted to have some fondue and AMA today as the season winds down. Give you those Super Bowl picks. And we will be bringing you another episode on Tuesday. And that episode will have the footie award winners. Oh, will it not Brooks. We will have final winners.

46:20 ↗

And there were a lot of really close categories. So that will be a lot of fun. Footy Award winners will have the, yeah, and go vote. What's the, what's the URL there, Brooksie? That's footy awards.com. That seems easy enough. It's spelled F-O. O. O-Tie. Just trying to make this as long as possible for Al. It is an I-E, not a Y. Yeah, footy awards.com. Vote before Monday. And we'll have the NFL playoffs to talk about on Tuesday as well. After we said all those things, watch Baltimore win by three touchdowns, and then Miami goes on to take out Buffalo. NFL can be crazy sometimes. Enjoy the games, and we'll see you next week, everybody. Goodbye. Thank you for listening to another episode of the Fantasy Footballers podcast.
