NFL Coaching Changes & Fantasy Impact, It’s Birthday Time - Fantasy Football Podcast for 3/3

I will call that neutral at best, but really not good. I mean, there weren't fantasy options on that roster that you could count on outside of Jalen Hertz. No, the offense wasn't necessarily great. I think he got off to a strong start. He would be number two in like coaching hires last year as far as NFL outlook. I think he exceeded the expectation that I had for him, but for fantasy purposes, not so much. And then one year wonder, David Coley. The fall guy? Didn't have a chance. So, you know,

transitions. You got nine new transitions. You saw the hit rate last year. It wasn't great. That's not to say more can't work out this year. But these are bad teams. Part of the hit rate is one of those guys we talked about. He's already gone. Right, right. And that's not the first time that's happened. I mean, two of those guys. Yeah. I forgot. Collie. You're talking about Urban Meyer? Yeah, that was, I'm not laughing at Coley. I'm laughing at Urban Meyer for being a buffoon. Coley was, they did him dirty there. Yeah. Well, he did his.

He did his best. He did. That's the point. Yeah. His best wasn't good enough, Mike. I guess. All right. Let's start with the Chicago Bears, brand new head coach, brand new offensive coordinator. Last year, we know the story, 27th and points per game. 30th in passing yards. 29th and passing touchdowns. The wheels fell off for Matt Nagy. Welcome in the former defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts, Matt Iber Fluse, an offensive coordinator, Luke Gatsy, replacing Bill.

Laser. That's the big one. Like Iber Fluse defensive guy, you know, that's, that it is what it is. So the bigger questions are over for our man, Luke. What do we think he's going to do for the growth for Justin Fields? Which is everything. Yes. He was, he's coming from the Green Bay Area, Green Bay quarterback coach for the past couple years.

So getting to work with one of the greatest of all time. Did he pick up enough tools from that situation that he can propel just to field forward to be the quarterback that they hope and believe he can become? This one scares me. This one I, you know, I've been wrong on my outlook on a coach before, but this to me was.

He was a quarterback coach with a Hall of Fame quarterback, right? He's obviously not trying to make Aaron Rogers learn how to play and become a better quarterback. He's, you know, probably doing as much what Aaron Rogers is telling him to do. And then their offensive coordinator goes away and gets a head coaching job. And instead of taking over that offensive coordinator job, he moves to a new job. This is a guy who hasn't called plays before.

And so it's, and now he's going to be for a defensive head coach. So I'm, I was disappointed because I like Justin Fields. I hope he overcomes. But I don't think he was set up like properly with the coaching staff to really confidently groom him forward the way that I think Jacksonville did a much better job focusing on their rookie quarterback and saying, what do we need to do to.

to put a team around him that has a history of success. And maybe Luke gets, gets he is better than I'm expecting. Well, now, big brain. Does Luke have the inside track that Rogers is going to be gone? And Jordan loves going to be the quarterback. And he's like, I want no part of that. Get me out of here. I'm going to go coach Justin Fields. Possibly. I mean, that could be the reason he, he left the.

the Packers, but it's weird to me to see, like he changed teams to take the role that was available for him on his current team. So yeah, maybe if Aaron Rogers was known to be leaving, then heck yeah, I'd bail. Well, who's calling plays in Green Bay, though? It's LaFloor. So this is his opportunity to call plays, but I hate when a first time play caller is an offensive coordinator. Well, whenever you have an offensive coordinator getting promoted, or I mean a quarterback coach.

or offensive coordinator getting promoted on the basis of a Hall of Fame quarterback's performance. Adam Gaye starts to come to mind. And you get a little, you take a step back. They're not going to be able to help Justin Fields with a first round draft pick. So they ain't getting a first round wide out or a first round offensive lineman to help that struggling offensive line. So, you know, you're still in a division that presumably will bring Aaron Rogers back. The Packers are going to be.

competitive. The Vikings are going to be competitive. And so the 6 and 11 bears have a lot of work to do. And it's all going to be on the back of Justin Fields. You know, the question here is if you're taking a bet on Justin Fields with a new coaching staff in 2022, you know, as of March, is this a guy that can be top 12 to you? Can 100%. He can be. Will he? That's a much more difficult question.

I mean, I think he's a fringe top 12 guy. I don't have him there. He is a mobile quarterback. So he's obviously, I think this is one of those situations where he could be not the best, not the best for the NFL, but still be good for fantasy. Like Jalen Hertz last year, Jalen Hertz was not phenomenal for the NFL. I know they made the playoffs, but it was a terrible division. I still think that he will produce enough to be fantasy relevant.

I would bet against him. Four of his final five games, he was at least the quarterback 10. Yeah, exactly. Or better. He's a mobile guy. But I would bet against him taking the career leap towards being a franchise guy now. For what it's worth, defensive head coaching hires. So Iber Fluss was the defensive coordinator in Indianapolis. Over the last four years, it has not been a good run. Vic Fangio fired. Brian Flores fired.

Ja Rule, Matt Ja Rule. He's on thin ice in Carolina. Joe Judge. Judgment day came for Joe Judge. Ron Rivera, okay, one good, one bad. Nice start for Brandon Staley. Again, Brandon Steeley's job here is to stand out from the crowd. And so far, so good. Robert Sala, bad start. I mean, to be fair, most coaching hires fail miserably. Ah, and just in general. That is true. Yes.

The Broncos, let's move on. New head coach, new offensive coordinator, Nathaniel Hackett, coming over from Green Bay, their former offensive coordinator. And then Justin Outen, replacing Pat Shermer as the offensive coordinator as well. The Broncos struggled.

offensively last year, 25th and passing touchdowns, 23rd in passing points per game. Obviously, they are flipping from Vic Fangio to an offensive mind and Nathaniel Hackett. You know, it's the same conversation about being connected to a Hall of Fame quarterback and how well that works. So can Denver function, can he fix Denver's offense? And is it just going to come down to really one level above him fixing the quarterback position? Yeah, I mean, the truth is.

It always comes down to the quarterback. I know that you had Nathaniel Hackett with one great year with Blake Bortle. So you have an example of having a bad quarterback, having a great year. But, you know, Nathaniel Hackett has been a longtime offensive coordinator in the league, and he hasn't really been phenomenal outside of that single year or when he's got the Hall of Fame quarterback. I do like Nathaniel Hackett. I think this was a good hire to bring in an offensive guy. It is pretty...

crazy how depleted the offensive coaching staff. They've all been pilfered from Green Bay. So maybe to Mike's point, maybe they do know something or they're afraid of something there. They get promotions. I mean, that's what it is. When a team is good, you lose your coaching stuff. Yeah. The reality is Nathaniel Hackett won't hack it if they don't get a quarterback. They won't. I mean, if they don't get. What was the over under? I know we had it set of who's going to make the joke first.

And Jason, you took it. And I'm proud of it. I will lean in. I had you at minus 110. I don't think that there was anybody who really looked at this offense last year and said, man, a change of Vic Fangio is going to fix it. Or like, you need another mind to come in and help us figure out which wide receiver can perform or running back.

it is what you said at the top. It's going to come down to what quarterback they put in place there. And maybe Nathaniel Hackett being of the offensive side of the ball is able to bring that along faster than we'd expect if it's a younger quarterback. If it's somebody that you want to recreate the Green Bay system and be efficient in this offense. I think we need more pieces of the puzzle to make projections on this. I at least like that the management for the Broncos are not hiding.
